School Students Mixed Methods Study:
Empatika is currently implementing a mixed methods study in partnership with Stats4SD to provide insights on the supporting factors to help children succeed in school and in their futures, including areas such as school environment, learning outcomes, supporting environment, nutrition and sanitation. The study includes a quantitative survey, an Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) test, along with an RCA immersion.

This is Empatika's first experience implementing a quantitative survey and the same researchers that carried out the survey in August returned last month for conducting the RCA immersion. We're excited about this opportunity to develop a fully-integrated mixed methods report. Having our researchers conduct the quantitative survey provided valuable capacity building along with additional learning for the immersion-phase of the research. The final report is expected to be completed early next year.

Post-Disaster Multi-Purpose Cash Transfer Assistance:
This study intends to understand the experiences and perceptions of people in communities where Multi-Purpose Cash Transfer Assistance has been provided post-disaster in Central Sulawesi and Lombok. Teams visited six communities in Central Sulawesi and two in North Lombok. In each community we used a two-day scoping immersion to build contextual understanding and to begin to build relationships in the community. Following the scoping immersion we conducted participatory focus group discussions (pFGDs), two with groups of recipients of the assistance (one with women, one men) and one session with a group of non-recipients (mixed group of women and men) in each community. All teams stayed overnight in the communities they visited.

After completing the main fieldwork, teams of three facilitators returned to one community each in Central Sulawesi and North Lombok for conducting Digital Storytelling (DST) workshops. These four-day workshops with around eight participants each
went deeper into people's personal experiences post-disaster and provide powerful stories that we hope will allow people to further connect and empathize with the study findings.

The Empatika team is now working on the final report and findings are expected to be presented at workshops with local partners and the government.
